As you probably know, SONA was deeply involved in the coalition that negotiated and passed the Music Modernization Act (MMA). The MMA establishes a Music Licensing Collective (MLC) to administer the collection and distribution of digital mechanical royalties enshrined in the MMA. The legislation creates a Board which will oversee the implementation and administration of the MLC. By statute, this Board will include ten publisher seats and four self-published songwriter seats; additionally, there will be five songwriter slots each for the ten person Dispute Resolution Committee and the ten person Unclaimed Royalties Committee established by the MMA.
Along with BMI, ASCAP, NSAI, and the SGA, SONA representatives have been involved in a Selection Committee to choose songwriters for all of these slots. We wish to make completely clear that only songwriters from the five groups listed above have participated in this democratic selection process: there has been no participation or influence from publishers, major, independent or otherwise, in any part of this process. It has been completely run by and for songwriters.
Simultaneously, the NMPA and AIMP have engaged in their own separate process to select publisher representatives for the MLC Board, Unclaimed Funds, and Dispute Resolution.
Both groups have now made their selections, and the writer and publisher names will be submitted as one slate to the Office of Copyrights in Washington, who will certify the results.
SONA believes that strong songwriter leadership is critical to a Mechanical Licensing Collective that is truly accountable and responsive to the songwriters it serves. The men and women selected by the Songwriter Selection Committee are a passionate, knowledgeable group of working songwriters who will vigorously and unflinchingly fight for the interests of the creator community. Now is the time to take action and demand what was promised with the passage of the Music Modernization Act. Sign your name to our petition and support the combined slate MLC. Let the Copyright Office know that our MLC is the ONLY choice to guide our ranks through the new challenges and opportunities we face. Together, we will ensure songwriters a powerful voice at the table of ideas in a new music economy.

We are Songwriters of North America
SONA (Songwriters of North America) is an advocacy organization formed by and for professional songwriters to fight for our rights; our right to fair pay in the age of digital media; our right to speak out and give a collective voice to the songwriting community; And in lieu of a union to uphold the standards of safety and equality in our workplaces, where music is created.
The current rates paid to writers by music streaming media companies are grossly unfair, unsustainable, and unacceptable. We’ve assembled some of the most fiercely passionate and hardworking people from all corners of the songwriting world to educate, strategize, and mobilize…and with our legal support team, comprised of truly the best creative-rights legal minds in our industry, we are making a difference.
