A letter from our friends at musicanswers:
musicanswers notes with alarm the removal of Maria Pallante as the United States Register of Copyright. An attorney with extensive experience in issues of importance to both copyright holders and users, Ms. Pallante has been an independent voice, charting a balanced course for the future that will protect the benefits to all of this constitutional right.
Her sudden and surprise removal is an unprecedented step by the Librarian of Congress, and we are eager to learn more about the reasons for, and the forces that influenced, this questionable decision. To our knowledge, no music creators or music creator organizations were consulted in advance about this move. We are aware of numerous reports that Google and Public Knowledge, the advocacy group it funds, brought a good deal of pressure to bear on the administration to change the course of the Copyright Office and that they are celebrating Ms. Pallante’s removal.
Please visit musicanswers.org as this story develops and to join our campaign to protect and promote the rights of all music creators. And please spread the word!
