SONA is an advocacy organization formed by and for professional songwriters in 2015 to fight for songwriters’ rights, including:
★ Our right to fair pay in the age of digital media
★ The ability to advocate for ourselves
★ Our right to safety and equity in our workplaces
In other words, SONA is the closest thing to a union songwriters can legally have.
★ The economics of streaming make it nearly impossible to benefit any one songwriter. Songwriters need a collective voice to fight for the value of their work.
★ Roughly 3⁄4 of what a songwriter earns is decided and controlled by outdated government regulations.
★ Songwriters are not allowed to unionize under current U.S. law.
★ We fight at the highest levels of our government and our industry for the value of our profession amid the challenges of a rapidly shifting music marketplace.
★ We put #songwritersfirst! SONA is creator-founded and creator-led – we represent no one else’s interests but songwriters and composers. Sometimes we’re the only voice of the songwriter in the room where big decisions are made about songwriters.
★ We educate the songwriting community about our profession’s most pressing issues, and create community where we build our strength in numbers.
★ Songwriters, composers as well as any music industry professional or person who supports our mission!
