SONA and Sona.stream amicably settle over use of trademark “SONA” name
Through friendly negotiations, Sona.stream agrees to change their name
LOS ANGELES, CA, May 1, 2024: In December of 2023, Songwriters of North America (SONA) became aware that a company launched as a Web3 streaming service aiming to empower creators with “Sona” as its name. As SONA is an established creator rights advocacy organization fighting for songwriters’ fair pay in the digital streaming era, it caused substantial confusion in the marketplace to have the trademarked SONA moniker associated with a streaming service.
SONA was connected to the other company’s leadership by Stephane Emeret of SACEM, and through friendly negotiations, Sona.stream agreed to change the name.
“We were surprised and confused to hear our name used in connection with a streaming service,” said Michelle Lewis, CEO of SONA. “But thanks to quick action between our incredible trademark attorneys and our own Dina LaPolt, it has all been worked out amicably. SONA applauds efforts that allow music creators to control and monetize their work. I thank everyone involved who made this solution possible.”
