Story of SONA

From our humble beginnings in 2015 to becoming a powerhouse advocate for songwriters, here’s a glimpse into what makes us Songwriters of North America.

Timeline:

2015 – Inception and Unity Formation

🌟 Founded by a group of passionate songwriters, SONA was born with a mission to protect the rights and interests of songwriters in North America in an ever-changing music marketplace. With streaming changing the financial landscape for songwriters, the journey began with a spark of unity and a shared love for the songwriting profession.

2016 – Advocacy and Growth

📢 SONA’s voice grew louder as it tackled critical issues affecting songwriters. Through strategic advocacy efforts, the organization played a pivotal role in raising awareness about the challenges faced by songwriters in an evolving digital landscape.

2017 – Amplifying the Message

📣 With a rapidly expanding membership, SONA continued to amplify its message and work on affecting policy. Collaborations with fellow music industry entities and the development of educational resources showcased its dedication to empowering songwriters.

2018 – Shaping Legislation

📜 SONA’s influence extended to legislative arenas, where we actively participated along with other songwriter advocates in shaping the Music Modernization Act that would better protect the rights of songwriters. The organization’s commitment to advocating for fair compensation and recognition was unwavering.

2019 – Strengthening the Community

🤝 Fostering a sense of community among songwriters became a hallmark of SONA. Workshops, networking events, and showcases provided invaluable platforms for songwriters to connect, learn, and thrive.

2020 – Adapting to Change

🌐 The challenges of a global pandemic didn’t deter SONA. Instead, the organization  established a new fund that distributed emergency grants to songwriters facing economic hardship due to the pandemic.They embraced virtual platforms, offering online resources, webinars, and virtual gatherings to support songwriters during uncertain times.

2021 – Celebrating Wins

🏆 SONA celebrated significant victories in its ongoing fight for songwriter rights, and launched the annual SONA Warrior Awards to acknowledge those advocates who were pivotal in the journey. These wins underscored the importance of collective action and the positive impact of the organization’s relentless efforts.

2022 – Expanding Horizons

🚀 Building on its success, SONA expanded its reach and influence, collaborating with international songwriter organizations and advocating for equitable rights on a global scale.

2023 – Looking Ahead
